Reading Instruction in the Classroom: Engaging all Learners

This workshop affords participants the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the five components of reading as identified by the National Reading Panel in 2000. The evidence supporting instruction in these five areas continues to accumulate and the case is even stronger today than it was in 2000. Continued studies of phonological awareness, phonics, vocabulary, oral reading fluency, and reading comprehension strategies completed since 2000 have confirmed the generalizability of the findings to an expanded range of students including younger kids, older kids and second language learners (Shanahan, 2017).  It has been found that difficulties in any of these components can make comprehension difficult for students. While this workshop is based on the research, the bulk of the day will focus on the practical aspect of teaching students to read and participants will learn games, activities and strategies for each component that teachers can take back to their classroom and use immediately.

Participants will:

  • Gain a deeper understanding of each of the components of literacy

  • Engage in a number of games, activities, and strategies for each of the components

  • Learn activities to support high engagement in the classroom

  • Explore various sites for additional resources to use with staff, families, and students

Important Information:

Classroom Teachers, Literacy Instructors, and Special Educators working with Grade K-5 students. Middle school teachers would benefit from the workshops as well.

Jill Pompi, Ed.S.
has over thirty years experience as an educator. She earned her B.S.  in Elementary Education from North Adams State College, her M.Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction from MCLA, her reading specialist certification from MCLA and her Ed.S. in Language and Literacy from Simmons College. In 2016, she earned her elementary school principal licensure and her superintendent licensure.

Jill has fourteen years of experience as an elementary classroom teacher (Grades 1-5), two years as a reading specialist and seven years as a literacy coordinator. She has served as Title One Director and Curriculum Director for a school district in Massachusetts. In addition, Jill has served as a reading consultant for numerous schools in Massachusetts and Rhode Island and has taught both graduate and undergraduate courses at MCLA, Bay Path College, Simmons College, and Westfield University. Jill co-wrote an article that was published in the Journal of Research in Education and has given presentations about Action Research in the Classroom, RtI, and the Five Components of Reading Instruction. Jill is Wilson Level 1 certified and is a National Trainer for Language Circle Project Read and provides workshops across the country in all strands of the program. Jill has presented at International Dyslexia conference and at the Connecticut Dyslexia Conference on the topics of writing and comprehension.

Jill was recognized as Berkshire County Educator of the Year in 2015 and was presented the Distinguished Educator Alumni award from MCLA in 2017.
