Project Read Courses

Linguistics
Presented by Nancy Raskind
A decoding and encoding approach for older students who are still having difficulty mastering the reading process. Linguistics presents the history of written language, phonology, morphology, syntax, vocabulary, affixes, roots and word origins. This process takes students through the seven syllables of our language and builds a strong understanding of dictionary skills. Each unit of study directly teaches a specific skill that promotes vocabulary enrichment and reading fluency. Spelling is taught through the application of grapheme origin, frequency of use and place value organized into units of study, targeted for students in grades 4 through adult. Grades 4 - adult.

Phonics
Presented by Jill Pompi, Ed.S.
A decoding and encoding approach based on systematic phonics using multisensory strategies and materials delivered through direct, concept teaching. The sequences of concepts and skills progresses from the simplest to the most complex. The reading decoding curriculum is basic explicit Phonics starting with phonemic awareness, proceeding to sound/symbol correspondence, syllabication, and ultimately to context. This course provides teachers with classroom proven research-based strategies. Promotes vocabulary and fluency. Designed for primary level students, but is basic for any age person at a beginning level in decoding the written word. Grades K- 3 (or anyone at a beginning level of decoding).

Reading Comprehension
Presented by Jill Pompi, Ed.S.
Reading Comprehension teaches Report Form (expository- grade 2 through adult), Story Form (narrative-grade 6 through adult), and Story Form Literature Connection (narrative-grades 1 through 5). The teaching approach is direct concept instruction using multi-sensory strategies and materials. It teaches a process of analyzing the underlying structure of expository and narrative writing and is presented in a sequential, dependent order of concepts and skills. This process transfers to other curriculum areas to give the student a level of language independence. The curriculum was designed primarily for grades 1 through adult learners. Grades 2 - 12.

Written Expression
Presented by Jill Pompi, Ed.S.
The foundation of communication through written expression is the basic sentence. This course is designed to give students mastery of sentence structure as well as paragraph development and composition. Sentence structure is presented in a sequential order beginning with the simple sentence and moving to complex sentences using multi-sensory strategies to develop the basic concepts and skills of written expression. The curriculum can be started in grade one and is applicable through adult education. Grades 1 - adult.

What is Project Read?
Project Read is a comprehensive language arts program designed to provide explicit instruction in a structured reading curriculum. The goal of the program is to help all students become thoughtful, purposeful, and independent readers. Project Read Curriculum may be implemented in the regular classroom, special education classes, and Title I classes. It may also be used as an intervention reading program for first through sixth graders or with adolescents and adults who struggle with reading or language learning. Whole or small group instruction is delivered by a classroom teacher, a special education teacher, or a reading teacher. Lessons are intended to occur daily within an extended block of time devoted to reading instruction. Emphasis is placed on systematic, direct instruction of concepts and skills supported and enhanced by a teaching approach that includes visual, kinesthetic, auditory and tactile strategies (VAKT), and the use of body language.
