Project Read Courses

The purpose of this course is to provide teachers with an understanding of the various methods of phonics instruction on the reading instruction continuum. This course will present an overview of research and theories which relate to the teaching of reading. Topics covered will include the concept of alternative instruction, the need for alternative instructional systems, principles of a systematic curriculum, and the value of multisensory techniques. The primary focus of this course will be on the use of direct, explicit, systematic and multisensory instruction to teach accurate decoding to students having difficulty learning to read and spell. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationship between the ability to decode with automaticity and the ability to comprehend text. As a direct result of this course, participants will have an understanding of instructional practices in language arts for ALL learners including those who, for a variety of reasons, were precluded from learning through traditional instruction. Grades K-12
