10:45-12:15: The Key Three Routine: Effective

- Overview of three key foundational skills: identifying
and stating main ideas, note taking and summarizing
- A model of basic, consistent strategy activities:
generating topic webs, turning main ideas into
questions, taking two column notes and writing
summaries

Vocabulary Instruction in the Content Classroom
- How to select the most important words to teach to
reinforce content learning and to build vocabulary
- Overview of activities to strengthen vocabulary:
connecting vocabulary to background knowledge,
using semantic maps, using context and how to teach
word parts

Presenter: Joan Sedita, M.Ed.
Joan Sedita is a recognized expert on literacy for
grades 4 - 12, a founder of Keys to Literacy and the
author of the following books and programs:
- The Key Three Routine: Comprehension Strategies
- The Key Vocabulary Routine
- The Key Notebook Routine
- The ANSWER Key to Open Response
- The Landmark Study Skills Guide
- LETRS Module 11 - Writing: A Road to Reading
Comprehension
Joan is an experienced, national trainer, consultant and speaker on adolescent literacy issues and content
literacy instruction. In addition, she is an experienced educator. She worked at the Landmark School for 23 years as a teacher, supervisor and principal.
Joan was a lead trainer for the Reading First
Program in MA, and a national LETRS trainer. She is
a member of Praxis National Reading Advisory
Board, an “Ask the Expert” contributor to ADLIT.org, a
member of NALC (National Adolescent Literacy
Coalition) and an adjunct instructor at Fitchburg
College. Joan received her M.Ed. in reading from
Harvard University and her B.A. from Boston College.

Substitutions:
Substitutions may be made. Please notify The Reading Institute with the name of the alternate participant in advance.
Confirmations:
Confirmations and directions will be mailed to each participant. You are not registered unless you receive a confirmation letter.
