April 28, 29, 30, 2009

Workshop 2:
Foundations: An Introduction to Language & Literacy
May 4, 5, 6, 2009

Foundations: An Introduction to Language and Literacy is the latest addition to a family of respected professional development literature, Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling (LETRS). This training text was developed in response to a documented need for an appealing entry level curriculum that teaches teachers about reading, how reading happens, why some students struggle to learn, and how to teach reading. It prepares teachers for a life time of learning and practice through building a knowledge base about language and the science of reading.

Foundations sets the stage for future learning, renewal, and practice through continued LETRS training. With a basis well grounded in scientific research, teachers will learn about:

  • Language ingredients that play key roles in the decoding and comprehension of written language.
  • Scientific research, what it is and how it contributes to our understanding of how proficient readers read and why some individuals struggle to learn to read.
  • The brain, and how it processes written language to enable reading.
  • The importance of, and how to build oral language and vocabulary skills.
  • Phoneme awareness, phonics, fluency, and comprehension.
  • The reciprocal relationships between language and the five components of reading instruction.
  • Essential teaching behaviors that lead to higher levels of learning.

Every teacher deserves access to the most pertinent information upon which to base their instructional decisions. Foundations provides engaging exposure to innovative content and opens doors to this information through carefully designed exercises, guided study of research abstracts, the collection and reflection of new learning, and individual practice with presented teaching methods. It is a carefully paced study that presents just enough knowledge and related practice to stimulate an interest in scientific research, and provide teachers with an advantage of knowledge and tools relevant to initiating a successful career in reading instruction.
